WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – The world is not on a “good track” in achieving a global goal of avoiding the worst effects of climate change. It needs to intensify efforts to get away from fossil fuels by the end this decade, John Kerry said Monday, U.S. special envoy to climate change.

“We are in trouble. Kerry said that he hopes everyone can understand this at the Building Momentum to UN COP27 event hosted by U.S. Chamber of Commerce officials and Egyptian officials, who are the hosts of the UN’s next climate summit.

Kerry stated that he was concerned by the increase in coal use globally, and the plans to build more coal plants using carbon capture technology.

Egypt will host the UN’s next climate summit (COP27) in Sharm el-Sheikh, November. Here, the government will show its work in phasing out coal power generation, improving waste water management and launching public transportation projects.

Sameh Hazan Shoukry, Egyptian Foreign Minister, said that Egypt would host the UN Climate Summit. Egypt’s goal is to speak for African nations most affected by climate changes and help them implement the Paris climate deal.

Shoukry stated that “we will listen to Africa’s needs and prioritize countries which have been greatly affected by the adverse effects of climate change.”
