VATICAN CITY, (Reuters) – Pope Francis said Wednesday that the danger of war in Ukraine has caused him “great pain” and urged politicians in his wake to examine their consciences before God.

Francis, speaking in a somber tone after his weekly general audiences, urged leaders and politicians to avoid further suffering. Ash Wednesday was declared an international day of fasting, prayer, and fasting for peace on March 2.
