Lucid, an electric vehicle manufacturer, is launching a new version of the popular Air luxury sedan.

Lucid Air Grand Touring Performance was announced Tuesday. It will come with 1,050 horsepower, and an initial price of $179,000. Since its debut last fall, the Air sedan has been praised for many things. The Dream Edition’s 1,111 horsepower performance is what impressed most.

However, this model was not easy to achieve. Lucid capped production of the Dream EditionOnly 520 of them, and all were spoken months prior to Lucid’s birth shipping the first Airs from its Arizona factory last October.

Lucid said Tuesday the Grand Touring Performance — with specifications that very nearly match the Dream Edition and a starting price just $10,000 higher — won’t be as limited in production.

Lucid, meanwhile is in its early stages of production. The Air made a huge impression on the premium end of luxury EV markets. Late February saw the company announcing that they had produced about 400 vehicles in its first year of production, with about 250,000 reservations.

In 2022, it expects to produce between 12,000- 14,000 vehicles. down from a prior forecast of 20,000 as global supply-chain disruptions have slowed the ramp-up of Air production.

Peter Rawlinson, Lucid’s CEO, stated that they developed the high-performance model because there was still a lot of demand for an Air that had a 4-figure horsepower rating.

Rawlinson stated that Lucid’s “vertical integration” made it possible to quickly develop the new model. Lucid builds and develops its own battery packs and electric motors, instead of relying upon third-party suppliers like large automobile manufacturers.

The supply-chain problems that nearly every automaker around the globe has faced have resulted in performance adjustments for the Grand Touring Performance. However, the specs for the Air remain impressive.

  • You can travel from zero to 60 MPH in 2.6 seconds. This compares with the claimed 2.5 second time for the Dream Edition.
  • EPA estimates a range of 446 miles, versus 471 for high-performance Dream Edition.
  • Lucid’s DreamDrive Pro advanced driver-assist software, comes standard with most of the hardware required for fully autonomous driving.
  • Lucid has a lightning-quick charging system of 900 volts that can add up to 300 m to range in just 21 mins. It also comes standard with a 350 kilowatt DC Fast charge.

Air 2 beats all other high-performing models TeslaIn most cases, but not for acceleration. Tesla Model S Plaid launched last yearWith 1,020 horsepower and a range of 396 mi (EPA estimate), starting price just over $130,000 – and a claimed zero to 60 time of 1.99 seconds.

Grand Touring Performance (previously announced Lucid Air Grand Touring) is an upgraded version of the 819-horsepower Lucid Air Grand Touring. Lucid stated that this model is now shipping.

In June, the U.S. will receive its new Grand Touring Performance model.
